1:1 Counselling with Zena Nicholas

People often come to me trying to make sense of their experience, whether that’s as autistic, ADHD, or a more general sense of feeling different to those around them.

Many are also navigating this alongside the impact of marginalised experiences connected to race, culture, gender and sexuality. Often there’s a sense of exhaustion in that, or of having had to adapt for a long time.

In therapy we take time to understand all of this together, where it’s come from, what’s shaped it, and what might help. Over time, this can open up more choice in how you want to live, and what feels important.

Anti-oppressive practice

Many of us have been led to understand that our struggles come solely from within.

While I have confidence in the internal strength and capacity we each hold, I also recognise that many of us have been, and continue to be, oppressed, discriminated against, and disadvantaged in ways connected to our intersecting identities.

In my work, I try to hold a balance, not minimising the impact of cultural and societal influences, while also not focusing so heavily on systemic issues that the individual experience is lost.

What to expect

People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes there’s something specific they want to change or understand, and sometimes it’s less clear than that, just a sense that something isn’t quite working, or hasn’t been for a while.

We’ll spend time talking about what’s going on for you, and what you might want from the space. That might become clearer over time, or it might stay open. We’ll stay with what feels important and useful.

For some people, therapy becomes a place to understand themselves more clearly, or to begin making changes. For others, it’s about having somewhere to bring what feels difficult, things like grief, pain, or experiences that haven’t had space elsewhere.

There’s no one way this work has to look. We go at a pace that feels manageable, and stay with what matters.
